All About Kenya

The Safari & Me Guide

The Basics

  • While most camps and lodges in Kenya accept US dollars (USD) as a form of payment, the official currency of Kenya is the Kenyan shilling (KES).

It is recommended to use the local currency when possible to avoid potential issues with exchange rates and to ensure you are getting a fair price for goods and services.

  • The long rains come in April & May with short rains in November so these months are best to avoid unless you’re looking for a bargain.

The High Season is December, July, August and September, the latter months being when the annual wildebeest are grazing in the Masai Mara. The weather is dry and it’s a great time for wildlife however the parks are busy and can be quite crowded.

February and October are a great time to enjoy dry weather and quieter parks.

  • Kenya has two official languages: English and Swahili. English is widely used in business, government, and education, while Swahili is the national language and is spoken by the majority of the population.

In addition to English and Swahili, there are over 60 other languages spoken in Kenya, including various Bantu languages, Nilotic languages, and Cushitic languages.
